kirsty h.

i'm a young art student, split between the quaint reaches of West Virginia and Baltimore. i'm not a green woodpecker. this is kind of more of an internet diary than a decent blog.

you can find me at these other internet venues:
twitter, goodreads, last.fm, and steam. you can shoot me an email at kirstyhambrick@gmail.com.

interested in a semi-organized list of tags that you could use to find a post? i have your back.

    Pitchfork:

“Usually I’m pretty purposeful about my grand theft, like stealing the guitar sound from [Robert] Fripp for ‘All I Want’ and stuff like that,” James Murphy told the A.V. Club last June. This comment is the perfect summation of Murphy’s referential aesthetic. It’s the important thing to remember with LCD: Murphy is not writing and recording this stuff hoping that no one notices where he is borrowing from. He’s not living in fear of being discovered. The borrowing, in cases like “All I Want”, is a large part of the point. “There’s all this anxiety that people are going to ‘catch’ you,” he told Joe Colly in a Pitchfork interview. “No one wants to get called out for being derivative or something. It’s like, we’re all making rock. No one’s reinventing the wheel over here. If anything, the balance is struck by not worrying too much about it. So I’m spending my energy trying to make a good song rather than spending my energy trying to cover my tracks.

    I love this album. Compare:

    “All I Want” vs. “Heroes”

“Drunk Girls” vs. “White Light, White Heat”

    “Somebody’s Calling Me” vs. “Nightclubbing”

  2. today is my day off. it’s stiflingly grey. i slept in. i used my meal plan to eat a single bowl of cheerios with bananas in it. i paid for two cardigans with one dollar coins. i twisted my ankle and fell in an alley on the way home. i haven’t had meaningful social interaction in entirely too long and i just noticed dried blood is making my now-battered tights stick to my knee. but i refuse, i refuse to look the way i feel.

    THIS AIN’T NO DISCO

dear everyone, please know that life during wartime has become my jam once again, except now i feel it’s even more important to me because damn, it could be about baltimore. david byrne and i are MICA siblings in blooood even though i’m a freshman and he never graduated

  4. today, so far

    cons:

    • woke up this morning to find a huge puddle of water coming from our heater/ac unit
    • i made something that i actually loathe
    • making art kinda sucks right now
    • i don’t know where my drawing class sketchbook is
    • i have six seven?  sketchbooks i have to simultaneously work in
    • all i want to do is skype with my sister

    pros:

    • before today, i haven’t made anything i actually loathe since i got here
    • hating everything i make usually means i’m on the edge of some major breakthrough. plateaus, you guys.
    • talking heads
    • my drawing teacher told me he really loved what i was doing for a gesture in class today. it was one of those things where i wondered if everything i do is mediocre because he hadn’t talked to me for a couple of hours and he pulled me kind of aside and said i was doing a good job.
    • it’s 60 degrees and i ate lunch outside by myself and was completely happy with it
    • i’m seeing future islands, bamboo, and weekends soooonnnn (and it’s free)

    weird grey area:

    • having your teacher tell you you’re doing a good job and being compelled to cry
    • deciding mentioning all of this was a good idea. the Things I Do So My Parents (Who Do Read This, P.S.) Can Worry About Me For No Good Reason

  10. hey everyone!  i’m back at school and things are great so far. but i have news!

as some of you remember, it’s been my plan to make a nicer blog for a long time now. i finally did it! i had to for a class, but it was a push in the right direction, i think.

there’s nothing there right now, but expect drawings and scribbles and the occasional word.

also, if you’re on blogspot or whatnot, then hey, let’s hang out in yet another little corner of the internet. it’ll be great.
